Ever since we first laid eyes on Katniss Everdeen’s “Girl on Fire” dress in The Hunger Games, we’ve been enthralled with the futuristic, unapologetically avant-garde style seen in this spring 2012 blockbuster. Here’s our Indian spin on the best Hunger Games fashion.
Katniss’ “Girl on Fire” Dress
If there’s one look that defined The Hunger Games, it’s hands-down Katniss’ “Girl on Fire” outfits. The first time we experience this fiery look is when Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence, appears at the Capitol for the presentation of the tributes wearing an outfit designed to represent her district. Katniss sucks the air out of the room in her futuristic, military-inspired black suit and literally appears to be on fire. Katniss stuns the crowd with another “Girl on Fire” outfit during her interview before the games, this time a red evening gown that burst into a sea of flames as she twirled for the crowd.
Looking for a flirty take on Katniss’ “Girl on Fire” dress? Luxemi’s Red Net Saree with Metallic Sequins by Satya Paul has all the drama and movement of Katniss’ fiery gown, thanks to the gorgeous sequin work in its artistic flame-inspired design. But our favorite touch is definitely this saree’s shimmering copper blouse, which reminds us a lot of the metallic gold Prabal Gurung gown Jennifer Lawrence wore to The Hunger Games move premier.
Effie Trinket’s fashion takes avant-garde to a new level. With her cotton candy wigs, blinged-out nails, heavy purple makeup, oversized headpieces and mega-volume dresses, there’s no denying Effie (played by Elizabeth Banks) makes a strong fashion statement wherever she escorts the District 12 tributes. We can definitely see a bit of Alexander McQueen in this Capitol style icon, and whether you love her look or not, you have to admit her outfits make major impact!
Effie is a tough fashion act to follow, but we love her penchant for mixing color and volume. Our spin on Effie’s eclectic high-drama style is this Neon Lehenga with Gota Work by Laila Motwane. With a structured cherry red blouse and a full skirt, this lehenga makes a bold, confident statement from its cute boat neckline all the way down to its punchy, heavily embroidered falls. (And did we mention that its borders also feature a bit of Effie’s signature purple hue?)
Katniss’ red “Girl on Fire” gown and Effie’s avant-garde ensembles may not be the easiest looks to replicate, but with a little imagination, you can weave Hunger Games fashion into your everyday wardrobe.
