5 Ways To Spice Up A Sari

Sprucing up a conventional saree

Sari: Neeru Kumar, Jewelry: Luxemi

Elegant, versatile and always event-appropriate, saris are all that and more. As much as we love our six yard desi wear staple, we can’t help but feel that wearing them the same ’ol way can get monotonous at times. That’s why we dug around to bring you five exciting ways to amp up your sari looks. From simple spruces to plain edgy, pick the style that best suits your personality. Rest assured, boring will be wiped out from your sartorial vocabulary once you adopt one of these ingenious styling suggestions.

Cinch it with a belt

Sprucing up a conventional saree

For those who would rather not go overboard with the experimentation, adding a belt is the easiest way to spruce a sari. Take your pick between a traditional kamarbandh and an edgy western-looking belt, depending on the sari in question. What’s more, apart from being wildly chic, this style also creates the illusion of a narrower waist.

Try a different drape

Sprucing up a conventional saree

The regular pallu drape can sometimes be yawn inducing, don’t you agree? So why take that route when there are so many more interesting drapes you can have fun with. Wrap your pallu around your neck instead of throwing it over your shoulder or bring it to the front and pin it on the other shoulder. The sky is the limit when it comes to draping!

Add a jacket or cape

Sprucing up a conventional saree

Sonam Kapoor and Anamika Khanna have collectively made this the most preferred way to add a contemporary twist to a traditional sari. The buzz created by Ms Kapoor’s cape sari worn on the Cannes red carpet this year indeed bears testimony to the fact. So if you’re wearing a heavily embellished sari, throw a sheer cape over it. An embroidered jacket over a simple chiffon sari is also a good way to go.

Skip the old school blouse

Sprucing up a conventional saree

Play around with your blouse to give an old sari an instant update. From a long corset blouse, Bengali style full-sleeved version, cropped jacket blouse, asymmetrical hemline blouse or one with interesting back detailing, there are so many options to choose from.

Wear the pants

Sprucing up a conventional saree

Take this inspired styling idea from runway to reality at your next desi soiree. Who needs a petticoat when you can wear pants instead! Take a cue from some of our favourite gen-next designers and team your sari with churidaars, wide legged trousers or even skinny jeans!  While you’re at it, slip into sneakers for a fitting sporty luxe avatar. Are you game?

How would you spruce your sari? Tell us in the comment box below!

Dress like Deepika Padukone — Bollywood’s Favorite Fashionista

Deepika Padukone in Vogue September 2013 issue

Deepika-Padukone, Vogue India September 2013

Deepika Padukone is our latest Bollywood girl crush. This doe-eyed beauty has earned some serious style cred with her recent super chic sartorial picks, making one thing very clear —this stylista can do no wrong. Ever since her movie Cocktail, she seems to be on a style roll, putting only her most fashionable foot forward. When I interviewed her a couple of months back, she simply brushed off this ‘style icon’ tag saying that she blindly trusts her stylist when it comes to her appearances (modestly skipping that not everyone can pull off the looks she does). And the stylist in question, Vogue India’s Anaita Shroff Adajania, constantly seems to be pushing the envelope when it comes to Padukone’s wardrobe. Here’s a round up of the looks we love most on her!

Deepika Padukone in monochrome outfits

Monochrome is a hot favorite with this B-town’s fashionista and it’s a look she wears well. Take a cue from her and slip into our Black and White Hand Painted Saree by Satya Paul. Accentuate the look, as Padukone often does, with a pop of color by way of footwear, accessories or red lips.

Deepika Padukone in muted colors

While most people shy away from muted colors for the fear of looking dull, Padukone (seen here in Sabyasachi and Ridhi Mehra) seems to have the trick to wear it down pat i.e. create talking points by sprucing it with statement earrings, an interesting updo and a radiant smile. Add this hue to your repertoire with Luxemi’s Peach Anarkali with Zari and Gota Work and Peach Burnout Saree by Satya Paul.

Deepika Padukone wearing Rachel Roy jumpsuit

But that’s not to say that she skips out on color all together. The fashion fraternity’s it-girl can pull off the most daring colors with effortless élan. We love this Rachel Roy jumpsuit she was spotted in recently. For those of you scouting for a similar desi ensemble, look no further than this Short Flare Salwar by Kisneel.

Deepika Padukone in lace outfits

Another trend Padukone has been quick to embrace is lace — be it in the form of dresses, tops or traditional wear. Our Gold Embellished Chantilly Lace Saree promises a touch of elegant sophistication, reminiscent of her looks.

Deepika Padukone in kundan set

And now for the look we are totally swooning over — a winning juxtaposition of old-world charm with a contemporary vibe — is the pairing of traditional/kundan jewelry with western silhouettes. Snag this look easily with our Geometric Gold Kundan Set and Gold Kundan Collar and Earrings worn over a cocktail gown or LBD at your next formal soiree.

We’d love to know what you think of Deepika Padukone’s style too. Tell us in the comment box below!

Luxemi’s Ultimate Guide To Wearing Polkis

Sonam Kapoor flaunts a polki set

Sonam Kapoor is the poster girl for ‘pretty in polki’!

There is a good reason why no fashionista ever gets bored of her polkis. One of India’s most time honored jewelry techniques, it has captured the imagination of desi luxe loving ladies since the Mughal period. Simply put, polki, a speciality of Bikaner in Rajasthan, is a term used to refer to ‘uncut diamonds’. They are mined from the earth naturally and boast of no added frills, enhancement or synthesis. Synonymous with old-world glamour and royalty, there’s no going wrong with it.

That’s not to say that its antique appeal makes it outdated. In fact the Luxemi girl would say quite the contrary! Don’t we all have that one (or many) cherished polki set that can take us from a red carpet soiree to a traditional wedding with equal elan?

This week we bring to you the ultimate guide on making the most of your polki baubles, no matter where you’re headed! Also look out for our quick tips on maintaining and taking care of your precious polkis.

Polki set + Traditional lehenga = Wedding reception ready

Tips on taking care of polkis

  • Your kundans and polkis should be kept away from chemicals, perfumes or any other kind of body spray. Always slip into the jewelry 10 minutes after you spray on perfume.
  • Store them in separate boxes or pouches and never stack them on top of each other.
  • Since kundans and polkis are prone to moisture, store them in dry areas.
  • It’s preferable to wrap them in muslin as opposed to cotton, as the cotton fibres may get stuck in the pieces.
  • Warm non detergent-based soapy water is your best bet to clean your polki pieces from time to time.

So there you go… enjoy your beautiful polkis and shine bright in ‘em! :)

Anita Dongre's Timeless collection

This is unarguably our favorite time of the year. Wonder why? Thanks to the weddings galore lined up, but of course! Who doesn’t love a good Indian wedding, and luckily for us, our mailbox is filled with invites and calendar already choc-a-block.

As much as we love the nonstop singing and dancing, delectable spread of food and OTT outfits of this desi extravaganza, there is another Big Fat Indian Wedding trend that gets our seal of approval — destination weddings! In a bid to achieve ‘picture-perfect’, no destination is off the cards and no exotic locale is being left unexplored. Trust us when we say that destination weddings are indeed the way to go. So, we round up some of our favorite exotic locations along with style notes on what to pack for each of these cities. Hope couples all set to tie the knot (and their wedding planners) are listening!

DESTINATION: Istanbul, Turkey

Perfect for: A culture-soaked affair

Istanbul has fast catapulted into a hot spot for Indian weddings and with good reason at that. Turkey’s largest city is perfect for a themed OTT celebration reminiscent of a grand Turkish bazaar.

Hotel extraordinaire: It doesn’t get any better than the Ciragan Palace Kempinski. A flamboyant time beckons.

Luxemi + Nishka Lulla’s Fall wedding guide

Is it just us, or is your calendar chock-a-block with weddings for the next few months too? The onset of a new season can mean only one thing – putting together a fresh new wedding wardrobe to strut through the season in style. So we decided to get an expert – Nishka Lulla – on board to make this a breeze.

Designer Nishka Lulla

Nishka Lulla

Fashion designer and Bollywood/celebrity stylist, Lulla has made quite the splash since she forayed onto the scene in 2009. Her clientele boasts of Bollywood biggies such as Katrina Kaif, Sonam Kapoor, Asin, Deepika Padukone, Genelia D’souza and Ameesha Patel among others and she is also lauded for her boho-chic personal style. She speaks to Luxemi and curates Fall wedding looks you absolutely ought to be swearing by. So, listen up!

Mehndi

Sing, dance and basically make merry at one of the wedding’s more intimate functions.

luxemi Peach Tulle Salwar

Luxemi’s Peach Tulle Salwar

Nishka says: “The outfit needs to be practical yet stylish. Avoid full sleeves and swear by coral for this function. Luxemi’s peach tulle anarkali salwar is a great pick.”

Sangeet

One of the most awaited wedding events, the sangeet is all about reveling in the limelight for a true fashionista.

watermelon net lehenga with a contrasting mango dupatta

Luxemi’s watermelon net lehenga with a contrasting mango dupatta

Nishka says: “Since color blocking bright hues is trending these days, a different colored lehenga, choli and dupatta is a perfectly striking way to go. Go easy on the embroidery and let the colors take centre stage. Luxemi’s watermelon net lehenga with a contrasting mango dupatta is your best bet.”

Cocktail party

Indulge in a night of debauchery but with a fashionable flair.

sequined hot pink coat from Luxemi

Luxemi’s sequined hot pink coat

Nishka says: “Go for an indo-western look. Pick an Indian ensemble with an utterly western silhouette and cut. Since coats are ruling trend charts, you could wear a coat style kurta with cigarette pants and Luxemi’s hot pink silk coat with sequins fits the bill.”

Pheras

Embrace your roots whilst celebrating this new beginning.

mango salwar by Nikasha with gota embroidery

Mango salwar by Nikasha featuring gota embroidery

Nishka says: “Go traditional for the pheras with essentially Indian colors. Vintage is another chic option. Oxidized vintage Indian embroidery such as zardozi and gota work is just what this function demands.” And it doesn’t get better than our mango salwar by Nikasha with gota embroidery.

Reception

This is your time to play the glamorous social butterfly to the hilt.

luxemi gold sequined sari

Nishka says: “Since metallic is one of the biggest Fall trends, sport it at the reception for a diva-esque look. A sequin sheathed saree teamed with a metallic gold or silver blouse will definitely look fabulous.” Our gold sequined sari and complementing blouse will do the trick.

So there you go…with a guide as high on style as this, you’d agree when we say that stunning the wedding scape just got a whole lot easier!

Guest Post by Shaadi Belles: Get the Bollywood Looks You Love- For Less!

Editors Note: Luxefans, you’re in for a treat. We get a lot of requests asking us to re-create some of our favorite Bollywood looks and the amazing gals at Shaadi Belles have done just that.  Let us know which ones you love in the comments!

When planning for a wedding or any function, every girl looks to the red carpet and the runway for some style inspiration. But every girl also doesn’t have the ability to pay those red carpet and runway pricetags. So what’s a belle to do when she’s lusting after a must-have outfit but is stuck with a limited budget? We picked five of our favorite trends and are showing you how you can quickly and easily get the look you love while paying a whole lot less, thanks to the gorgeous collections at luxemi.

So Fresh and So Colorful

The fastest and easiest way to add a fresh and bright touch to a traditional lehenga is to add a dash of color. Think outside of the usual reds and maroons and look for outfits that incorporate hints of pinks, oranges, and yellows to make a stunning style statement. Parineeti Chopra walked the runway for Maheka Mirpuri’s “Khwab” collection in a sparkling orange and gold lehenga. The bright color added a fresh and glamorous twist to the traditional outfit that we love. You can create a similar look with this brocade lehenga available at luxemi—the bright pink dupatta adds that pop of color that we love. Don’t forget to add loads of gold accessories for even more sparkle!

bridal lehenga 2

Neutral Nets

Want to add some subtle elegance to a sleek net saree? Choose a neutral-colored outfit for an elegant and timeless look. Neutrals pair gorgeously with gold embellishments for a perfect bit of sparkle to the toned-down shade. No one does neutrals better than Shehlaa Khan, and plenty of Bollywood’s leading ladies (including her BFF and muse, Sonam Kapoor) agree! Kajol once wore a stunning nude-colored Shehlaa by Shehla Khan saree covered with sparkling gold embroidery for a public appearance—a classic up-do and minimal jewelry were the perfect finishing touches. This gold-sequined saree available at luxemi is all you need to recreate this gorgeously classic look. Add a sleeveless blouse for a sleek and sexy take on the traditional drape.

neutral 2

Graced in Lace

Lace sarees are one of our favorite new trends, especially in the warmer weather! The light fabric is the perfect way to add a quintessential feminine and romantic spin to any outfit, especially one as classic as a saree. Pastels and softer shades especially shine in lace—we are lusting after a light turquoise lace saree Deepika Padukone recently wore to a public appearance. The soft color turns even more elegant thanks to the lace fabric. Luxemi once again saves the day with this stunning purple chantilly lace saree. Keep the jewelry simple for a daytime function or add a statement necklace and earrings for a more formal event.

lace

Royalty in White

One of our favorite takes on the recent anarkali trend has been the growing popularity of angrakha-style dresses. Dating back to the Mughal era, angrakha tops feature a kurta top in which one side overlaps the other and is tied with an ornate tassel. The result is a look that is as regal as it is glamorous. Take your ode to royalty a notch higher by choosing a classic shade like white, the way Bipasha Basu did when she wore a stunning Armaan by Sunaina Puri white angrakha suit. The fitted top paved way for a flowing skirt that had this leading lady looking every part the royal. You can be the princess at any party in this white angrakha suit—gold or silver jewelry will each pair beautifully with this timeless shade, take your pick!

white

Amaze in an Anarkali

The anarkali trend is one that’s here to stay, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. This universally-flattering outfit looks good on nearly anyone, and designers can’t seem to get enough of this elegant look. The latest suits are deep in color and high on style—collared necklines, longer sleeves in sheer nets, and tons of embellished embroidery, are just some of the ways designers are taking this traditional outfit and adding a modern dose of glamour. You are guaranteed to see at least one stunning anarkali dress at nearly any Manish Malhotra runway show. His recent collections have showcased a rich color palette—including deep purples, blues, and pinks—paired with brocade borders and sheer long sleeves. For those of us that don’t have Manish available on speed-dial, this stunning brocade and aari-embroidery suit (bonus style points for that asymmetrical hemline!) available on luxemi does the trick when we want to channel our favorite Bollywood style guru.

3 Ways to Wear a Crop Top

With warmer temperatures comes higher hemlines. And we’re not just talking about your pants and skirts.

Crop tops are making a comeback from their 90s heyday. This isn’t a look for the timid, but if you’re willing to experiment, the crop top promises some va-va-voom for your spring wardrobe. Poppin’ trendsetters like Miley Cyrus and Diane Kruger have stepped out in this trend, and you can too!

And here’s a novel idea: we’re thinking our sari blouses are so gorgeous, why limit them to your special events? Get some extra use out of ‘em and put an ethnic flair on this trend for something equal parts chic and head-turning. Luxemi has shared tips in the past for how to pull this look off, but here’s some fresh inspiration and advice.

TIP 1: BLAZE SOME TRAILS WITH A BLAZER.

Button up that blazer if you're feeling some chills, or let it hang carelessly open for some sass.

Button up that blazer if you’re feeling some chills, or let it hang carelessly open for some sass.

Yes, that workplace staple is a savior come sundown. Whether it’s happy hour or a date with that special someone, err on the side of sophistication with a simple blazer and jeans. Alternate ideas: a shawl or well-tied scarf can be a trendy, unique take on this look.

TIP 2: OPPOSITES ATTRACT.

Get some extra mileage with slouchy clothing partners.

Get some extra mileage with slouchy clothing partners.

You’ve got tons of choices when pairing tops with potential bottoms, but aim to not overexpose with a mini-skirt or your skimpiest shorts. A little coverage goes a long way in being sexy without looking like you’re going to a rave. This might be a good time to pull out those MC Hammer pants you can’t get rid of or those slouchy gauchos. P.S.: Fitted crop tops couple beautifully with baggier pieces. Just ask Miley.

TIP 3: WHICH WAY TO THE GUN SHOW?

Doutzen Kroes knows how to do it: enough skin to scintillate without getting scandalous.

Doutzen Kroes knows how to do it: enough skin to scintillate without getting scandalous.

As in: check out your arms. If you have a sleeve on that crop top, you can afford to go higher on your hemline. Shorter sleeves means a maxi can be your go-to. Think balance: you’re cutting hemlines on one piece, so consider lowering the other.

Here are a few pieces we’re keeping in mind for our next night out. Search “blouses” at luxemi.com for a complete selection of blouses for your next saree and/or soiree!

Best Bollywood Style – Fashion Inspired By Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif + Malaika Arora

If there’s one thing Bollywood is known for, it’s vibrant, spirited opulence, so it’s no surprise that Bollywood actresses have a penchant for festive designer fashion when they hit the Red Carpet. If your Indian wardrobe could use a little glamour, let Luxemi help you get the Bollywood look!

fashion inspired by bollywood get the bollywood look

Bipasha Basu has been a Bollywood Red Carpet mainstay since her 2001 Filmfare Award-winning role in Ajnabee, so we’ve had a lot of chances to see this celeb’s sensual style evolve. One of our favorite Bipasha looks is definitely this sunny Yashraj saree she wore on the Super Star Awards Red Carpet. With shiny foil and pearl embellishments and a chic contrast border, Luxemi’s Yellow Georgette Saree with Brocade and Pearl Border bears a striking resemblance to this Bipasha Red Carpet look!

Another major Bollywood style trendsetter is Katrina Kaif, who we recently spotted wearing this bold pink saree with a Gladiator-inspired gota border. You can get the same strong look by rocking Luxemi’s Navy and Pink Georgette Border Saree, which features a wide, heavily embellished gota border and gorgeous fabric that shifts from red to fuchsia to navy blue.

Actress and dancer Malaika Arora always brings a unique fashion style to Bollywood events, but we love her most when she takes a twist on the traditional. Malaika made major fashion waves when she wore this purple, red and white Laila Motwane creation. (Full disclosure: Laila Motwane is one of our absolute favorite lehenga designers!) You’ll make the same ethnic impact as Malaika Arora when you wear Luxemi’s Scarlet and Purple Lehenga with Gota Work by Laila Motwane. This designer lehenga has it all: intricate gota work, striking contrast borders, and a chic color pairing only Laila Motwane could dream up.

Whether you’re hitting the Red Carpet or just want to infuse some excitement into your wardrobe, Luxemi has the perfect look for you. Check out our collection for more sarees, lehengas and salwars that will reinvigorate you and your wardrobe!
