3 Ways to Wear a Crop Top

With warmer temperatures comes higher hemlines. And we’re not just talking about your pants and skirts.

Crop tops are making a comeback from their 90s heyday. This isn’t a look for the timid, but if you’re willing to experiment, the crop top promises some va-va-voom for your spring wardrobe. Poppin’ trendsetters like Miley Cyrus and Diane Kruger have stepped out in this trend, and you can too!

And here’s a novel idea: we’re thinking our sari blouses are so gorgeous, why limit them to your special events? Get some extra use out of ‘em and put an ethnic flair on this trend for something equal parts chic and head-turning. Luxemi has shared tips in the past for how to pull this look off, but here’s some fresh inspiration and advice.

TIP 1: BLAZE SOME TRAILS WITH A BLAZER.

Button up that blazer if you're feeling some chills, or let it hang carelessly open for some sass.

Button up that blazer if you’re feeling some chills, or let it hang carelessly open for some sass.

Yes, that workplace staple is a savior come sundown. Whether it’s happy hour or a date with that special someone, err on the side of sophistication with a simple blazer and jeans. Alternate ideas: a shawl or well-tied scarf can be a trendy, unique take on this look.

TIP 2: OPPOSITES ATTRACT.

Get some extra mileage with slouchy clothing partners.

Get some extra mileage with slouchy clothing partners.

You’ve got tons of choices when pairing tops with potential bottoms, but aim to not overexpose with a mini-skirt or your skimpiest shorts. A little coverage goes a long way in being sexy without looking like you’re going to a rave. This might be a good time to pull out those MC Hammer pants you can’t get rid of or those slouchy gauchos. P.S.: Fitted crop tops couple beautifully with baggier pieces. Just ask Miley.

TIP 3: WHICH WAY TO THE GUN SHOW?

Doutzen Kroes knows how to do it: enough skin to scintillate without getting scandalous.

Doutzen Kroes knows how to do it: enough skin to scintillate without getting scandalous.

As in: check out your arms. If you have a sleeve on that crop top, you can afford to go higher on your hemline. Shorter sleeves means a maxi can be your go-to. Think balance: you’re cutting hemlines on one piece, so consider lowering the other.

Here are a few pieces we’re keeping in mind for our next night out. Search “blouses” at luxemi.com for a complete selection of blouses for your next saree and/or soiree!

Beyoncé Fashion – 2013 Super Bowl, Inauguration + The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour

best super bowl halftime shows in history

If we had to sum up the first few weeks of 2013 in one word, it would be Beyoncé. Between the Presidential Inauguration and the Super Bowl halftime show, the singer is definitely taking the world by storm — and looking super chic doing it! Here are our fav Beyoncé fashion moments of 2013.

beyonce in pucci inauguration 2013 president obama

The 2013 Presidential Inauguration is definitely one of those events that calls for sophistication and glamour, and Beyoncé pulled out all the stops. While she sang the National Anthem, she wore a stunning black Pucci dress with all-over beading and emerald Lorraine Schwartz earrings.

And did you see how chic she and Jay-Z looked walking into the event together? We’re loving his sharp Tom Ford charcoal grey suit and her super glam Christian Dior floor-length coat.

Beyoncé may have literally brought the house down last night at Super Bowl XLVII. Whether or not she caused the massive blackout at the New Orleans Superdome, we were crazy in love with everything about her Super Bowl Halftime Show. That includes Mrs. Carter’s leather and lace corset. A lot of people were buzzing that she would go with a Givenchy Couture look, but we were so happy to hear a little-known designer from NYC created this killer outfit.

Designer Rubin Singer said it took 14 people and 200+ hours of work to create Beyoncé’s black corset, which included a Chantilly lace flounce skirt and armor-esque hand-stitched leather. Talk about fierce! Singer also created the looks that Destiny’s Child singers Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams rocked during the show. The Baltimore Ravens may have won the 2013 Super Bowl, but the halftime show was definitely the highlight of our night!

world tours 2013

Beyoncé must have sensed that the world can’t get enough, because a few minutes after the halftime show, she announced her 2013 world tour, The Mrs. Carter Show. We’re super psyched to see what gorgeous outfits Bey wears on the world stage, and can hardly wait to grab our tickets for the North American leg of the tour. Can’t wait til spring to get your Beyoncé fix? Here’s The Mrs. Carter Show official promo video to hold you over until then:

And as if Beyoncé hasn’t had enough on her plate, she also fit in time to produce a documentary! We can’t wait to check out her HBO doc, Life Is But A Dream, when it premieres on February 16. (We’re especially excited to see home video footage of Beyoncé as a kid!)

2013 SAG Awards Best Dressed – Strapless, Dior and Navy Blue Trends

Hot on the heels of the 2013 Golden Globes, this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards was definitely all about Old Hollywood glamour. Here are the SAG Red Carpet looks we’re awing over.

dior at 2013 sag awards

screen actors guild award winners 2013

Is it just us, or are we having a case of Dior déjà vu? Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard, who both rocked red Dior gowns at the Golden Globes, wore dresses by their fav designer again last night.

Jennifer Lawrence, who won Best Actress at SAG and the Globes for Silver Linings Playbook, wore a strapless navy blue Dior Couture dress paired with a stunning Chopard necklace.

19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards best dressed

And Marion Cotillard (Rust & Bone) was a complete showstopper in her strapless Dior Couture gown, which featured an elegant bow at the waist, a white bodice and a full skirt that made her the belle of the ball.

Another A-Lister who rocked navy blue was Amanda Seyfried, who was nominated for her role in Les Miserables. Her mermaid-cut Zac Posen dress was gorgeous, but the real statement here was her long Lorraine Schwartz necklace. Also wearing bold blue was Nicole Kidman, whose lacy Vivienne Westwood gown added some much-needed embellishments to the Red Carpet!

If you’re feeling this navy blue trend, we recommend you borrow Luxemi’s tonal saree with a sequin border. It’s got just the right combination of subdued bling and rich color. And if you’re in a salwar mood, try the ultra sophisticated bell sleeve zari salwar. It will have you feeling blue in the best way possible.

homeland sag awards 2013

We’re always searching for Naeem Khan on the Red Carpet, so we were psyched to see Homeland’s Morgan Saylor wearing one of his Pre-Fall 2013 gowns, which features hand-beaded embellishments throughout its bodice. We would’ve loved to see her in silver heels, though!

Between all the navy blue and black (Anne Hathaway and Tina Fey both wore LBDs), we were really craving some vibrancy. Freida Pinto gave the Red Carpet a much-needed pop of color in her fuchsia Roland Mouret gown. We’re crazy about this dress’ flattering draping and cute black bow detailing. Between this fashion-forward fuchsia and her highlighter yellow dress at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Freida is quickly becoming our favorite color icons. Looking to make a hot pink statement of your own? Try Luxemi’s bhandhani saree with a gota border.

And ladies, in case you haven’t noticed (or heard the new single, Suit & Tie), Justin Timberlake is back! The singer rocked a silk linen Tom Ford suit with a checkered pattern we totally love.

With the 2013 Golden Globes and the 2013 SAG Awards now over, we’re counting down the days until the Oscars. Be sure to check back for our coverage on the 85th Annual Academy Awards, and until then, get in the Oscars spirit by checking out our top fashion and jewelry picks from last year’s show.

First Lady Michelle Obama – Indian Pearl Jewelry Trend

We don’t have to tell you that pearls are as timeless and indispensible as the little black dress. But if you need a reminder of the pearl’s appeal, be like Luxemi and use the First Lady as inspiration. Here are Luxemi’s favorite Michelle Obama pearl looks:

first lady best fashion statements jewelry

If anyone can rock a strand of pearls, it’s Michelle. We especially love when she pairs multiple heavy strands with a sleeveless top. The look simultaneously shows off her toned arms and her sophistication! Talk about a 21st Century Jackie O.

One of Michelle’s most memorable pearl moments was when she wore these stunning Miriam Haskell pearl earrings to a state dinner in El Salvador. With two tiers or intricate silver work and delicate hanging pearls, these earrings definitely make a lasting statement.

Our Crescent Kundan Hanging Earrings bear a striking resemblance to Michelle Obama’s Miriam Haskell earrings, both in their shape and intricate pearl work, and can be paired with anything from a formal saree to a pair of jeans and cute top.

Best Bollywood Style – Fashion Inspired By Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif + Malaika Arora

If there’s one thing Bollywood is known for, it’s vibrant, spirited opulence, so it’s no surprise that Bollywood actresses have a penchant for festive designer fashion when they hit the Red Carpet. If your Indian wardrobe could use a little glamour, let Luxemi help you get the Bollywood look!

Bipasha Basu has been a Bollywood Red Carpet mainstay since her 2001 Filmfare Award-winning role in Ajnabee, so we’ve had a lot of chances to see this celeb’s sensual style evolve. One of our favorite Bipasha looks is definitely this sunny Yashraj saree she wore on the Super Star Awards Red Carpet. With shiny foil and pearl embellishments and a chic contrast border, Luxemi’s Yellow Georgette Saree with Brocade and Pearl Border bears a striking resemblance to this Bipasha Red Carpet look!

Another major Bollywood style trendsetter is Katrina Kaif, who we recently spotted wearing this bold pink saree with a Gladiator-inspired gota border. You can get the same strong look by rocking Luxemi’s Navy and Pink Georgette Border Saree, which features a wide, heavily embellished gota border and gorgeous fabric that shifts from red to fuchsia to navy blue.

Actress and dancer Malaika Arora always brings a unique fashion style to Bollywood events, but we love her most when she takes a twist on the traditional. Malaika made major fashion waves when she wore this purple, red and white Laila Motwane creation. (Full disclosure: Laila Motwane is one of our absolute favorite lehenga designers!) You’ll make the same ethnic impact as Malaika Arora when you wear Luxemi’s Scarlet and Purple Lehenga with Gota Work by Laila Motwane. This designer lehenga has it all: intricate gota work, striking contrast borders, and a chic color pairing only Laila Motwane could dream up.

Whether you’re hitting the Red Carpet or just want to infuse some excitement into your wardrobe, Luxemi has the perfect look for you. Check out our collection for more sarees, lehengas and salwars that will reinvigorate you and your wardrobe!

Designer Radar – Saloni Lodha Goes Jackie O For Fall 2012

When Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis traveled to Rajasthan, India as First Lady in the 1960s, her fashion captivated both East and West cultures. And it’s still doing so more than 50 years later. Luxe fans, check out Saloni Lodha’s Autumn 2012 line, which uses Jackie O’s 1960s visit to Rajasthan as fuel for her East-meets-West vibe.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis best style

During Jackie O’s India trip with President John F. Kenendy, her most iconic look was definitely a satin peach dress with a classic bow at the waist, which she wore during her celebrations in Rajasthan with Maharani Gayatri Devi. Paired with strands of pearls and white satin gloves, the dress is the epitome of the iconic Jackie O style.

Jackie O inspiration by Indian designers

Saloni Lodha’s Autumn 2012 collection channels Jacqueline Kennedy’s glamour through bee-hive-inspired up-dos, skinny headbands and classic fabrics such as tweeds and wools. But what we love most is how the Indian designer captures the vibrancy of Jackie O’s India visit via eclectic colors and funky patterns. The result: Classy, youthful 1960s looks we can totally see Jackie O rocking during her 20s and 30s.

best new indian designers retro collections

The collection starts off with a rich charcoal grey wool coat and grey and fuchsia ombré skirt, which we’re absolutely loving for fall and winter. Another of our favorite day looks is Saloni’s oversized tweed sweater, burgundy pants and a chunky heel. It’s one of those outfits that will make any girl look fabulous without much effort!

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis best style statements

And then there are the dresses. Between the short-sleeve wrap minis with funky Eastern patterns and the elegant floor-length gowns, the collection is all about making glamour accessible. It’s hard to pick favorites, but one standout is definitely Saloni’s cobalt blue body-hugging gown. What makes this dress so special is the large Indian-inspired paisley pattern, which absolutely pops in white and mimics the curves of the body in a super flattering way. We’re also swooning over Saloni’s floor-length coral dresses. Between their artisan beading and long silhouettes, these gowns add a hint of India to classic 1960s silhouettes.

Frida Kahlo – An Artist In Painting and Fashion

Folk artist. Nonconformist. Visionary. Eccentric. Feminist.  A lot of words have been used to describe Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo and her colorful, complex life, but for Luxemi, one important descriptor is missing from the list: Style icon. Whether it was her art or her fashion, Frida always marched to the beat of her own  drum. Here’s what we love most about the painter’s iconic personal style.

famous artists with iconic style get the look

indian jewelry frida kahlo

Frida is known for her eclectic mix of indigenous Mexican patterns, vibrant colors, full skirts and funky statement jewelry. Whether she was out with her artist husband Diego Rivera or at home behind the easel, Frida always chose bold clothing that spoke to her individuality. The artist also incorporated her quirky fashion sense into her famous self-portraits, in which she often depicted herself wearing scarves or flowers wound through her hair, and chunky necklaces and rings.

Vogue Mexico channeled Frida with this fashion spread inspired by the painter’s unique fashion sensibility. The mag gave Frida’s signature headscarves, oversized cocktail rings, and bright colors a modern twist that proves once and for all that Frida is a timeless symbol of individuality. Confession: We’re also loving the Indian-inspired bangles in these looks!

Luxemi can help you put your unique stamp on Frida’s funky style. Chances are, your saree or salwar already features some of the vibrant embellishments or textile work Frida was known for rocking. The key to taking your look to the next level? Accessories. Try pairing your favorite saree or salwar with this jewelry to let your artistic side shine. (And while you’re at it, feel free to put fresh flowers in your hair!)

Solange Knowles – Fashion Rebel with A Colorful Streak

Beyoncé Knowles may be a fashion household name, but her little sister Solange has been gaining a style following of her own lately. With her penchant for bright colors, a funky retro vibe and an undeniable adventurous streak, Solange is quickly becoming one of our fave fashion heroes.

Celebrity street style 2012 trends

We can’t think of many celebs who pull of street style as effortlessly as Solange does. Whether she’s hanging with her son, Daniel Julez Smith, Jr., or taking a stroll in NYC, she always steps out in style. We love how she put a fresh spin on office wear classics by pairing these high-waisted pleated pants with a vintage fitted jacket. But what made the look was the vibrant orange blouse, which is fitting, given that no Solange outfit is complete without a quirky pop of color.

Celebrity Red Carpet print dresses 2012 best looks trends designer gowns

Even though Solange’s street style has us smitten, Beyoncé’s little sister can definitely work the Red Carpet. We’re digging the daring print and asymmetrical hems on this artsy Vera Wang gown she wore in Spring 2012. And did we mention her gorgeous, bright pink lip color?

beyonce vs solange best fashion statements style

Whether it’s neon lipstick or a bold designer dress, Solange’s daredevil demeanor shines most when she turns up the color dial. We’ve spotted Solange in a lot of yellow lately, but her custom Rachel Roy dress from the 2012 Met Gala definitely took her color fetish to the next level. The gorgeous peplum waist and modern, architectural lines on this dress were the perfect, classic canvas for Solange’s spunky signature hue.

Solange is also known for picking funky, unconventional patterns like these florals, which remind us of the standout pieces from the Spring 2012 Louis Vuitton collection. (Beyoncé has also been embracing flower prints. Did you see her rocking those Hawaiian print pants from Stella McCartney’s 2012 Resort Wear Collection?)

One aspect of Solange’s style that really sets her apart from the pack is her fondness for fabulous accessories, whether it be a daring hairstyle, vintage Chanel, unconventional nails or, of course, bold necklaces, rings, and bracelets. We love Solange’s affinity for pairing chunky bracelets with everything from designer evening gowns to vintage button-down blouses. We can see our Luxe fans looking just as gorgeous in their Indian bangles or collar necklaces!

2012 Emmys Inspired Fashion – New Girl, Girls, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire

Is it just us, or are there a lot of fashionable women on Emmy nominated shows this year? From Zooey Deschanel and Christina Hendricks to Kelly MacDonald and Jemima Kirke, these women not only give stellar performances, they each have very distinct style sense that we love. Here are some Luxemi looks inspired by these ladies’ iconic, Emmy-worthy performances.

Zooey Deschanel – Jess Day, The New Girl

2012 Emmys Primetime style Zooey Deschanel

Whether it’s a quirky tuxedo manicure or a vintage peplum waist gown, Zooey Deschanel’s fashion choices always echo the singer-actress’ funky retro vibe. And the same goes for Jess Day in “The New Girl.” Our pick for Zooey and her quirky New Girl counterpart is this 1960s-inspired Turquoise Saree with White Patterns. The white paisley gives this darling chiffon saree just the right hint of retro to mirror Zooey’s style.

Christina Hendricks – Joan Harris, Mad Men

Madmen inspired Indian fashion saree salwar suit

The big surprise of the 2012 Primetime Emmys nominations is that Mad Men Costume Designer Janie Bryant was snubbed for the first time in the show’s five seasons. Still, there’s no denying the strong style that she outfits Christina Hendricks in to convey Joan Harris’ power and sex appeal. This Coral Wrap by Nikasha has a wrap fit that would accentuate Joan’s curves and undeniable 1960s flair. And the fact that it’s in Joan’s signature red makes it an even better fit for Sterling Cooper Draper’s sultry office manager.

Kelly MacDonald – Margaret Schroeder, Boardwalk Empire

Boardwalk Empire 1920s inspird Indian style

We love how Margaret’s style evolved in the second season of “Boardwalk Empire,” turning her from a modest (yet still chic) housewife into a sophisticated fashionista who embraces the era’s elaborate flapper style. This gorgeous, coppery Net Saree with Beaded Applique channels the era’s penchant for beading and shimmer while still reflecting the sophistication of Margaret and Irish actress Kelly MacDonald.

Jemima Kirke – Jessa, Girls

Girls HBO show inspired Indian accessories Jessa

No show this year has captured the twenty-something culture quite like HBO’s “Girls.” Each of the show’s girls has a distinct style, making it difficult for us to pick a favorite from this New York City foursome, but there’s something about ultra Bohemian Jessa that we’re definitely feeling. To portray Jessa’s eclectic, funky style, Jemima Kirke wears everything from oversized bangles and unconventional earrings and pairs them with flowing pants and feather-embellished coats. To put an Indian spin on Jessa’s style, we love these artful Kashmiri Kundan Wrap Around Earrings paired with this bold Turquoise Lotus Bracelet with Sapphires.

Whether it’s Jessa’s hip, eclectic edge or Margaret’s flapper flair, Luxemi can help you capture all the television the fashion statements you just can’t live without. We can’t wait to see which of these ladies wins big on the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards Red Carpet.

Designer Radar – Waris Ahluwalia’s Best Looks + House of Waris

waris ahluwalia indian fashion icon trendsetter

Luxe fans, meet Waris Ahluwalia, one of our favorite jewelry designers and fashion trendsetters. Whether you’re a cinephile, a jewelry guru, or a pop culture junkie, Waris is definitely a name to keep on your fashion radars (trust us). Here’s all you need to know about this dapper designer.

He collaborates with Indian artisans on his designs.

The Indian-born Waris moved to the U.S. with his family at age 5, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten his Eastern roots. He works closely with artisans in Rajasthan to hand-create each House of Waris piece, be it a gold and diamond statement necklace or a signature color-blocked scarf.

He’s taken his design company around the globe.

With celeb clients like Rihanna, Solange Knowles and Chloe Sevigny, the House of Waris is quickly becoming the “it” accessory design powerhouse. The company is becoming a mainstay in fashion mega-markets like Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, London, and Hong Kong — meaning Waris is a bit of a globetrotter.

He’s been known to cameo in Wes Anderson films.

If you thought you recognized Waris from his bit roles in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou or The Darjeeling Limited, you’re right. When the designer isn’t creating gorgeous jewelry or scarfs, he’s likely doing a bit of side-acting work in films by his close pal Wes Anderson.

He can’t live without his Rose-tinted Ray-Ban aviators.

The design guru calls his go-to sunglasses “the blue jeans of eyewear.” Pair those with Waris’ White Spring Courts sneakers, and you have his signature look.

Check out these five Waris Ahluwalia looks for a little fashion inspiration.
