Luxemi’s Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014 Lust List

Kareena Kapoor Khan for Rajesh Pratap Singh

Kareena Kapoor Khan for Rajesh Pratap Singh at the Lakme Grand Finale

The international fraternity may take a break from fashion week come March but it’s just the beginning for the Indian fash frat. After all it’s time for a fashion extravaganza more fondly known as  Lakmé Fashion Week! And just like every season, we lived on a steady dose of fashion for the five days of Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014 (read: 12th-16th March), with eyes for nothing else.

So once we kicked off our heels after Sunday’s finale show, we decided to dedicate space to some of our favorite traditional looks from the week that was! Here goes…

There were some strong trends that emerged this season. White and muted colors stole the limelight, providing us a much-needed reprieve for the neon overdose. Pretty pastels  also came out as a SS ’14 go-to. Fashion’s love affair with reinvented traditional silhouettes continued as designers sent fresh reinterpretations down the ramp. The churidaar seems to be a thing of the past — as comfort took centre stage, so did bottoms like palazzo pants, dhotis, skirts and loose trousers among others.

Design maestros at-LFW2014

L to R: Tarun Tahiliani, Neeta Lulla, Gaurav Gupta and Manish Malhotra

Several heavyweight names were part of the roster this season. Tarun Tahiliani presented a collection dominated by black and white and his SS ’14 signature draped saris were a clear top choice for us. Manish Malhotra’s ‘Summer Affair’ drew us in and we gave our vote to his soft hues, toned down floor length kurtas and intricate thread work. Neeta Lulla’s breezy collection was another favorite — especially because it was unlike anything the designer has presented before. This Indo-western line with a younger vibe gets props for wearability. Gaurav Gupta’s collection was high on drama, edgy cuts and signature use of metallic hues.

Anju Modi

Anju Modi

All eyes were on industry veteran designer Anju Modi  after her much talked-about styling of Deepika Padukone in Ram Leela. Her line was high on layering, voluminous flares, fluidity and tailored cuts typically associated with her designs. The pop of print was a welcome addition too.

Shantanu and Nikhil SS14

Shantanu and Nikhil

Shantanu & Nikhil’s Victorian-inspired collection was hauntingly beautiful and elegant. We loved the pairing of peplum blouses with the skirts and lehengas. If only they had refrained from that unnecessary runway selfie…

Sonaakshi Raaj and Ritika Mirchandani SS14

L to R: Sonaakshi Raaj and Ritika Mirchandani

Sari gowns were a ubiquitous pick for most designers and we are particularly digging these looks by Sonaakshi Raaj and Ritika Mirchandani.

Nupur Kanoi SS14

Nupur Kanoi

Nupur Kanoi was another top pick owing to her ingenious garment construction, muted color palette and fresh spin on Indian silhouettes. We call dibs on that desi jumpsuit!

Prama by Pratima Pandey SS14

Prama by Pratima Pandey

Prama by Pratima Pandey was one of the best Textile Day shows in our opinion. Her feminine line of loose pants, crinkled cotton midis and white sheer tunics with tonal and multi-colored embroidery in silk Chanderi and pure cotton had summer written all over it!

Mrinalini Chandra at LFW2014

Mrinalini Chandra

Accessory designer Mrinalini Chandra invited everyone to take a seat, quite literally, with her collection of statement pieces in recycled glass stones and semi-precious gems, all inspired by the humble chair. We, for one, can’t wait to flaunt this one!

Nikhil Thampi's Untamed at LFW 2014

Nikhil Thampi

And then there was Nikhil Thampi. Yes, we know we said we’re picking out our favorite Indian looks, but we just couldn’t resist. Such was the impact of his power-packed collection called ‘Untamed’. A round of sexy for all the ladies, please!

Frida Kahlo – An Artist In Painting and Fashion

Folk artist. Nonconformist. Visionary. Eccentric. Feminist.  A lot of words have been used to describe Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo and her colorful, complex life, but for Luxemi, one important descriptor is missing from the list: Style icon. Whether it was her art or her fashion, Frida always marched to the beat of her own  drum. Here’s what we love most about the painter’s iconic personal style.

famous artists with iconic style get the look

indian jewelry frida kahlo

Frida is known for her eclectic mix of indigenous Mexican patterns, vibrant colors, full skirts and funky statement jewelry. Whether she was out with her artist husband Diego Rivera or at home behind the easel, Frida always chose bold clothing that spoke to her individuality. The artist also incorporated her quirky fashion sense into her famous self-portraits, in which she often depicted herself wearing scarves or flowers wound through her hair, and chunky necklaces and rings.

Vogue Mexico channeled Frida with this fashion spread inspired by the painter’s unique fashion sensibility. The mag gave Frida’s signature headscarves, oversized cocktail rings, and bright colors a modern twist that proves once and for all that Frida is a timeless symbol of individuality. Confession: We’re also loving the Indian-inspired bangles in these looks!

Luxemi can help you put your unique stamp on Frida’s funky style. Chances are, your saree or salwar already features some of the vibrant embellishments or textile work Frida was known for rocking. The key to taking your look to the next level? Accessories. Try pairing your favorite saree or salwar with this jewelry to let your artistic side shine. (And while you’re at it, feel free to put fresh flowers in your hair!)

Luxemi loves when creativity and fashion go hand in hand, and there’s no better symbol of fashion’s artistic side than Frida Kahlo. Our accessory collection features necklaces, rings, bangles, hand chains and tikkas that will transform your wardrobe staples into eclectic forms of self-expression!

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 – Emerging Indian Designers

During every fashion week, there’s always that moment: The second when you realize you’re witnessing a collection from a designer who’s going to hit it really big really soon. Between Gen Next and the relative newcomers showing on the main stage, there were plenty of up-and-coming designers worth buzzing about at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012. Here are three emerging designers who sent looks that caught our attention down the Lakme runway.

Sidharta Aryan

best up and coming indian designers at lakme fashion week august 2012

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen a lehenga-inspired look as chic as Sidharta Aryan’s fitted floor-length print lehenga skirt and the sleek gold metallic jacket he paired with it. Add in tweed-inspired fabrics and 1960s-esque ethnic prints, and you’ve got a collection that makes major impact. Luxe fans, did Sidharta take a fashion forward step forward or make a fashion misstep by using mixed prints in his Lakme collection?

Vaishali Shadangule

best up and coming indian designers at lakme fashion week august 2012

Luxemi loves putting a modern twist on old school Indian fashion, so Vaishali Shadangule definitely gets kudos for deconstructing traditional fabrics to create the airy one-piece sarees in her Lakme collection. She also used vibrant headpieces to tie together each look — a trend we saw a lot of Lakme designers embracing (and loved)! Vaishali’s designs definitely make a strong statement; which look can you see yourself actually wearing?

Payal Khandwala

best up and coming indian designers at lakme fashion week august 2012

With muted colors and billowy silhouettes, this ultra-cohesive collection relies on color pairings and volume, rather than embellishments, to create drama. That approach leaves a lot of room for accessorizing. Luxe fans, do you think these looks are perfectly simple or borderline boring? We’d also love to hear what Indian jewelry you’d pair with these Payal Khandwala dresses.

Whether it’s an up-and-comer or a familiar face like Manish Malhotra, each designer at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 brings a unique blend of fashion inspiration to the runway. Want to see more collections the fashion world is talking about? Check out Luxemi’s full Lakme coverage!

Solange Knowles – Fashion Rebel with A Colorful Streak

Beyoncé Knowles may be a fashion household name, but her little sister Solange has been gaining a style following of her own lately. With her penchant for bright colors, a funky retro vibe and an undeniable adventurous streak, Solange is quickly becoming one of our fave fashion heroes.

Celebrity street style 2012 trends

We can’t think of many celebs who pull of street style as effortlessly as Solange does. Whether she’s hanging with her son, Daniel Julez Smith, Jr., or taking a stroll in NYC, she always steps out in style. We love how she put a fresh spin on office wear classics by pairing these high-waisted pleated pants with a vintage fitted jacket. But what made the look was the vibrant orange blouse, which is fitting, given that no Solange outfit is complete without a quirky pop of color.

Celebrity Red Carpet print dresses 2012 best looks trends designer gowns

Even though Solange’s street style has us smitten, Beyoncé’s little sister can definitely work the Red Carpet. We’re digging the daring print and asymmetrical hems on this artsy Vera Wang gown she wore in Spring 2012. And did we mention her gorgeous, bright pink lip color?

beyonce vs solange best fashion statements style

Whether it’s neon lipstick or a bold designer dress, Solange’s daredevil demeanor shines most when she turns up the color dial. We’ve spotted Solange in a lot of yellow lately, but her custom Rachel Roy dress from the 2012 Met Gala definitely took her color fetish to the next level. The gorgeous peplum waist and modern, architectural lines on this dress were the perfect, classic canvas for Solange’s spunky signature hue.

Solange is also known for picking funky, unconventional patterns like these florals, which remind us of the standout pieces from the Spring 2012 Louis Vuitton collection. (Beyoncé has also been embracing flower prints. Did you see her rocking those Hawaiian print pants from Stella McCartney’s 2012 Resort Wear Collection?)

One aspect of Solange’s style that really sets her apart from the pack is her fondness for fabulous accessories, whether it be a daring hairstyle, vintage Chanel, unconventional nails or, of course, bold necklaces, rings, and bracelets. We love Solange’s affinity for pairing chunky bracelets with everything from designer evening gowns to vintage button-down blouses. We can see our Luxe fans looking just as gorgeous in their Indian bangles or collar necklaces!

London Olympics 2012 Fashion – Gold Gladiator Glam

2012 london olympics indian fashion

After four years of anticipation, the London 2012 Olympics are finally here — and we’ve definitely caught Olympics fever. Given the games’ history of adorning the world’s best athletes in gold, silver and bronze, there’s no better time than now to give your wardrobe the Midas Touch. Here’s how to channel your inner golden gladiator in time for Friday’s Summer 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.

india fashion london olympic games 2012

Vogue India fell head over heels for Olympics-inspired fashion in its July 2012 issue, and this was the mag’s general consensus: Go for the gold. From warrior collars to sequined blouses and metallic mini-dresses to fierce cuff bracelets, these looks put a bold spin on gladiator glam.

From its heavily embellished Gota border to its powerful use of fuchsia, this Navy & Pink Georgette Gota Border Saree has warrior written all over it. Pair it with these impactful Sterling Silver Engraved Hanging Earrings or these Sterling Silver and Red Glass Earrings to ensure you’ll reign supreme over any fashion scene

2012 Emmys Inspired Fashion – New Girl, Girls, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire

Is it just us, or are there a lot of fashionable women on Emmy nominated shows this year? From Zooey Deschanel and Christina Hendricks to Kelly MacDonald and Jemima Kirke, these women not only give stellar performances, they each have very distinct style sense that we love. Here are some Luxemi looks inspired by these ladies’ iconic, Emmy-worthy performances.

Zooey Deschanel – Jess Day, The New Girl

2012 Emmys Primetime style Zooey Deschanel

Whether it’s a quirky tuxedo manicure or a vintage peplum waist gown, Zooey Deschanel’s fashion choices always echo the singer-actress’ funky retro vibe. And the same goes for Jess Day in “The New Girl.” Our pick for Zooey and her quirky New Girl counterpart is this 1960s-inspired Turquoise Saree with White Patterns. The white paisley gives this darling chiffon saree just the right hint of retro to mirror Zooey’s style.

Christina Hendricks – Joan Harris, Mad Men

Madmen inspired Indian fashion saree salwar suit

The big surprise of the 2012 Primetime Emmys nominations is that Mad Men Costume Designer Janie Bryant was snubbed for the first time in the show’s five seasons. Still, there’s no denying the strong style that she outfits Christina Hendricks in to convey Joan Harris’ power and sex appeal. This Coral Wrap by Nikasha has a wrap fit that would accentuate Joan’s curves and undeniable 1960s flair. And the fact that it’s in Joan’s signature red makes it an even better fit for Sterling Cooper Draper’s sultry office manager.

Kelly MacDonald – Margaret Schroeder, Boardwalk Empire

Boardwalk Empire 1920s inspird Indian style

We love how Margaret’s style evolved in the second season of “Boardwalk Empire,” turning her from a modest (yet still chic) housewife into a sophisticated fashionista who embraces the era’s elaborate flapper style. This gorgeous, coppery Net Saree with Beaded Applique channels the era’s penchant for beading and shimmer while still reflecting the sophistication of Margaret and Irish actress Kelly MacDonald.

Jemima Kirke – Jessa, Girls

Girls HBO show inspired Indian accessories Jessa

No show this year has captured the twenty-something culture quite like HBO’s “Girls.” Each of the show’s girls has a distinct style, making it difficult for us to pick a favorite from this New York City foursome, but there’s something about ultra Bohemian Jessa that we’re definitely feeling. To portray Jessa’s eclectic, funky style, Jemima Kirke wears everything from oversized bangles and unconventional earrings and pairs them with flowing pants and feather-embellished coats. To put an Indian spin on Jessa’s style, we love these artful Kashmiri Kundan Wrap Around Earrings paired with this bold Turquoise Lotus Bracelet with Sapphires.

Whether it’s Jessa’s hip, eclectic edge or Margaret’s flapper flair, Luxemi can help you capture all the television the fashion statements you just can’t live without. We can’t wait to see which of these ladies wins big on the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards Red Carpet.

Luxe Ladies: The Life and Style of Alana Watkins

As part of our blog series, Luxe Ladies, we’re featuring a real member of the Luxemi.com community to learn about her and her relationship with Indian fashion.

Luxe Report readers, meet Alana. We recently chatted with Alana about her life, her fashion inspirations, and, of course, Luxemi!

benefits of borrowing and renting indian outfits for weddings online

Luxemi: Can you give us your stats? Where you live, what you do?

Alana: I live in Chicago and work as a National Account Exec for a trade show company that produces local jewelry trade shows.

Luxemi: How would you describe your style?

Alana: My style is definitely eclectic, and I love mixing highs and lows. I need to feel comfortable and confident in what I’m wearing; those are the 2 fashion rules I always follow.

Luxemi: Where do you find your fashion inspiration? Any fashion icons you look up to?

Alana: I could peruse Paris street style blogs all day if I had the time. Their style is classic and feminine, all the while having an edge that American style cannot seem to grasp. When it comes to my style icons, they are two polar opposites (but I love them both equally!): Kate Moss and Audrey Hepburn. They always look(ed) so comfortable in their own skin, almost as though they never questioned anything they put on. I am very attracted to that type of confidence.
Luxemi: What is your relationship with Indian fashion?

Alana: The brilliant colors used in Indian fashion, especially in weddings, are so appealing, and I have always been a fan of the beautiful, gold jewelry. The fashion is so outgoing and has a personality of its own!

Luxemi: Why did you try Luxemi?

Alana: I knew I needed a major fashion strategy after receiving invites to 4 Indian weddings this summer (one was all the way in Slovakia!). Renting through Luxemi gave me the opportunity to play around with my own style without the heavy investments required for a lot of Indian outfits. In the end, I rented a beautiful sea green sari and an embellished suit.

custom suit for indian weddings available for borrow rental online luxemi

Luxemi: Where did you wear Luxemi? How was your look received?

Alana: I wore the sari to a wedding reception and the suit to a Sangeet. It seemed every auntie at the reception complemented me on the color, and the girls loved the ornate embellishments. The suit was loved by all, and many asked if I had it custom made!

Luxemi: What did you think about your Luxemi experience?

Alana: I love shopping with Luxemi even when I am not looking for anything in particular. The site is

so easy to shop and I truly trust the fashion sense of the curators behind Luxemi.

Luxemi: Any fashion advice/secrets you’d like to share with Luxe Report followers?

Alana: At the end of the day, fashion is supposed to make you feel good. Just have fun!
