Delhi Couture Week 2012 – Indian Designers To Watch

With all the fashion shows and jewelry weeks going on, August was a busy month for Indian fashionistas. Did you miss Delhi Couture Week 2012 somewhere between Lakme Fashion Week and India International Jewellery Week? Here are three couture collections that should definitely be on your radar this season.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee

We’re definitely digging the unique point of view Sabyasachi Mukherjee brought to couture week. The designer went retro by styling these looks with big glasses, sleek bun hairstyles and minimal makeup. The 1920s-inspired bows and collars on these dresses give them a hint of flapper glam, while the draping and silhouettes make the designer’s Indian heritage shine. We’re loving this textured knee-length jacket and red velvet pants, and the red gown with an oversized bow and saree-inspired draping. And we can’t forget the Sabyasachi saree Sri Devi rocked to open the show!

Varun Bahl

Between the fiery red looks and his night-ready, sophisticated purple and blue ones, Varun Bahl’s Delhi Couture Week collection could have easily looked like two separate lines. But then you notice the sheer detailing in every piece, and it all comes together. Whether it’s the sheer bodice on his red and gold lehenga or the sheer shoulders on his sequined boat neck blouse, the beauty in Varun Bahl’s couture looks is the mix of sensuality and sophistication. Classic Indian jewelry, bold red lipstick and sleek up-dos add the perfect touch of glamour to these runway looks.

JJ Valaya

Brocade has been a major trend in Western style this season, but JJ Valaya’s Delhi Couture Week 2012 collection definitely reminded us why this technique was made for Indian fashion! JJ’s meticulous metallic embroidery radiates from every angle, making these updated sarees and lehengas the ultimate lesson in contemporary luxury. We love his floor-length coats for Fall 2012  — especially paired with a long, sheer skirt and fire red pants. And don’t get us started on how sleek and modern his coppery zigzag brocade jacket looks with that black sequin dress.

Whether it’s Sabyasachi’s retro vibe or Varun Bahl’s undeniable sophistication, these Delhi Couture Week 2012 collections are full of fashion imagination. Did we leave out any of your favorite designers? We love hearing about the fashion that inspires you; drop us a line anytime!

Delhi Couture Week 2012 – Best Collections + Indian Fashion Trends

If there’s one fashion week in August that really excites us at Luxemi, it’s Delhi Couture Week. Don’t get us wrong: we love Lakme and India International Jewellery Week, but there’s something really special about the innovation and glamour that walks the runway at a couture show. Here are three Delhi Couture Week 2012 collections that turn up the drama dial on traditional Indian fashion.

Shantanu & Nikhil

As soon as we saw Shantanu and Nikhil’s pink gown with a heavily embellished bodice and mega-volume sleeves hit the runway, we knew the designer’s couture collection was going to have a memorable East-meets-West vibe. The design duo’s looks showcase the rich golds, royal reds, opulent brocade and luxurious draping that we all love in Indian fashion, but with a twist: imaginative silhouettes and luscious layering that take Western influence to a new, sophisticated level. The jackets were absolute stunners, and the gold saree-inspired dress definitely belongs in every girl’s dream closet!

Annamika Khanna

Annamika Khanna’s Delhi Couture Week collection reminds us that a little bit goes a long way. In the collection, Annamika creates bold, sophisticated looks without relying on mega-volume or vibrant colors, instead letting little details (bold collars on her blouses and exotic pattern work on her jackets) make these garments shine on the runway. Not many designers can pull off the minimalist look this well, and Annamika has her gorgeous silhouettes to thank for it. Case in point: Couldn’t you see girls everywhere from India to Chicago wanting to wear that tailored black jacket with those high-waisted crème pants?

Anju Modi

Anju Modi’s collection is all about giving classic Indian silhouettes an urban, modern edge. Whether it’s her tribal-inspired red, black and gold lehenga or that navy blue empire-waist dress with the embellished full skirt (it totally wowed us when it hit the runway!), this collection shows why Anju Modi is one of India’s most iconic couture designers. We love the more powerful looks, but couldn’t help but swoon over her super-feminine white dress with sheer detailing and a hand-knit bodice.

Whether it’s through shocking volume or innovative silhouettes, couture fashion always gets our fashion creativity flowing. In need of some wardrobe inspiration? Spring & Summer 2012 Trend – Floral Prints

Spring is blooming all around us, including in our closets. Roses, daffodils, daisies and orchids are by far the biggest fashion trend of Spring 2012, popping up in designer collections from Prada to Prabal Gurung and Dolce & Gabbana to Valentino. Here’s our take on the best florals of Spring 2012.

Indian inspired floral looks from runway designers 2012

As soon as the Spring 2012 Oscar de la Renta line hit the runway, the fashion world was swooning over its standout look, a romantic, vintage-inspired strapless gown with poppies and daffodils decorating its bodice and full skirt. Paired with a twiggy, flowered headpiece, this nostalgic look updates 1960s flower power for the modern fashionista.

Another design powerhouse to create floral romance is Valentino. Valentino’s Spring 2012 Collection features too many beautiful dresses to mention, but one memorable look was a wispy long-sleeve knee-length gown featuring an ethereal rose silk fabric that will be just as sophisticated decades from now.

One reason we love the floral trend is that it offers a ton of versatility. Valentino’s line went romantic with flowers, but other designers used florals in a vibrant, flirty way. Case in point? Proenza Schouler, whose mixed floral separates are punchy and super modern, Prabal Gurung, whose mix of blazers and blouses feature a bold purple floral print, and Altuzarra, who uses an edgy blend of leather and Hawaiian-style flowers.

The floral trend is also springing up on some of our favorite celebs. Kudos to Sonam Kapoor for looking both elegant and flirty in this floral and onion dress from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2012 Ready To Wear line. Other A-Listers who love florals: Jessica Alba, Shailene Woodly and Beyonce.

To snag your own whimsy floral look, Luxemi loves this Tonal Anarkali with Floral Gota Work. What makes this anarkali so stunning? The way its designer used gota work to make these flower motifs both intricate and bold. This look has the same soft tones as a lot of the standout gowns in Valentino’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection (which isn’t surprising, considering pastels and sorbet tones are also making a comeback this season).

For a punchier floral that features a brighter color palate, try this Floral Cotton Gota Salwar. This light and airy salwar has embroidered flowers winding perfectly around its seams, a style used in a lot of our favorite Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012 looks.

And if you want the ultimate artisan floral saree, this Handknit Flower and Rich Pearl Saree is breathtaking. Hand-knit red and pink flower blooms wrap gorgeously around this piece’s high-quality netting, and delicate pearl work gives the piece a haute couture feel. It’s romantic, unique, and the epitome of why florals are the perfect look for spring!

Whether it’s Proenza Schouler’s flirty florals or Valentino’s sophisticated blooms, Luxemi loves how flower prints merge Mother Nature with runway fashion. There’s no better time to let your inner flower power shine!
