3 Ways to Wear a Crop Top

With warmer temperatures comes higher hemlines. And we’re not just talking about your pants and skirts.

Crop tops are making a comeback from their 90s heyday. This isn’t a look for the timid, but if you’re willing to experiment, the crop top promises some va-va-voom for your spring wardrobe. Poppin’ trendsetters like Miley Cyrus and Diane Kruger have stepped out in this trend, and you can too!

And here’s a novel idea: we’re thinking our sari blouses are so gorgeous, why limit them to your special events? Get some extra use out of ’em and put an ethnic flair on this trend for something equal parts chic and head-turning. Luxemi has shared tips in the past for how to pull this look off, but here’s some fresh inspiration and advice.

Button up that blazer if you're feeling some chills, or let it hang carelessly open for some sass.

Yes, that workplace staple is a savior come sundown. Whether it’s happy hour or a date with that special someone, err on the side of sophistication with a simple blazer and jeans. Alternate ideas: a shawl or well-tied scarf can be a trendy, unique take on this look.

Get some extra mileage with slouchy clothing partners.

You’ve got tons of choices when pairing tops with potential bottoms, but aim to not overexpose with a mini-skirt or your skimpiest shorts. A little coverage goes a long way in being sexy without looking like you’re going to a rave. This might be a good time to pull out those MC Hammer pants you can’t get rid of or those slouchy gauchos. P.S.: Fitted crop tops couple beautifully with baggier pieces. Just ask Miley.

As in: check out your arms. If you have a sleeve on that crop top, you can afford to go higher on your hemline. Shorter sleeves means a maxi can be your go-to. Think balance: you’re cutting hemlines on one piece, so consider lowering the other.

Here are a few pieces we’re keeping in mind for our next night out. Search “blouses” at luxemi.com for a complete selection of blouses for your next saree and/or soiree!

Luxemi Founder Picks – Swapna + Swathi’s Favorite Indian Fashion Statements

There’s nothing Luxemi loves more than hearing about our Luxe fans’ latest fashion obsessions. And now it’s our turn to give you a little inspiration! Here are the Luxemi pieces that Luxemi’s co-founders, Swapna and Swathi, can’t live without.

Swapna’s top Luxe picks:

I love the regal, glam vibe of this Blue and Purple Davry Saree. I wore this saree to my brother’s wedding with Luxemi’s Gold Sequin Blouse by Wild Orchid and absolutely loved how it looked and felt! You’ll love it too once you feel this luxurious crepe silk!

Another of my favorites is our Bronze Stretch Satin Halter Blouse by Kavita Bhartia. Every girl should have this super versatile piece in her closet. It’ll breathe new life into your old sarees and, as an added bonus, the stretch means it will fit you like a glove.

When I spotted this Gold Gungaro Necklace, it was love at first sight. It’s a nod to old-school temple jewelry with a modern twist, and looks great layered over Eastern and Western outfits.

Swathi’s top Luxe picks:

I absolutely love our Red Brocade Salwar with Sequins and Gota Work. It’s just the right mix of red and orange, and the bib style adds just the right amount of flair. Plus, gorgeous brocade makes this piece feel extra-special.

If you haven’t heard the news, Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year is emerald, which is yet another reason to rock Luxemi’s Gold Earrings with Striking Emerald Quartz. These earrings will give you the perfect pop of color near your face.

It’s hard to find a Satya Paul saree I don’t love, but this Foil Printed “Club” Pallu Saree is definitely one of my favorites. It’s slim and sexy with a touch of flash. And did I mention that you don’t need to pleat the pallu?

We’re always happy to swap fashion advice with our Luxe fans. Contact us via Facebook, Twitter or email to tell us all about your favorite Luxemi looks and Indian fashion statements!

Kavita Bhartia – Designer Radar

Is it just us, or does up-and-coming Indian designer Kavita Bhartia get more fabulous with each collection she sends down the runway? Luxemi has always been enamored with Kavita’s style, but the visionary designer took her East-meets-West aesthetic to a whole new level in her Autumn Winter 2012/2013 collection at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.

What stands out about Kavita’s India Unseen collection? Her effortless way of adding glamour to traditional Indian techniques like zardosi and gota. Although her rich color palate upped the drama (charcoal grey, black, olive, sunset orange and gold don’t sound like they should mix, but she pulled it off perfectly!), the line’s biggest fashion-forward feat is its use of texture. With delicate beadwork and precise metallic threading in her fashion arsenal, Kavita Bhartia crafted some of the most beautiful georgette and chiffon garments we’ve seen this season.

Our favorite India Unseen look is this tribal-pattern pantsuit with chic sheer detailing and an airy silhouette that’s all about movement. And for an updated twist on the saree, our pick is this bold, warrior-inspired look that pairs a long-sleeved copper blouse with a classic red and gold color palate. What’s the best thing about both outfits? Their eclectic fusion of prints and textures — something only a designer with Kavita’s artful eye could make look so effortless.

Want to make Kavita Bhartia’s signature fusion style an everyday part of your wardrobe? This Light Olive Baby Doll Salwar by Kavita Bhartia has a fun, flirty shape that’s perfect for daytime. Another Kavita Bhartia look in Luxemi’s collection, the Orange Cotton Silk Gota Suit, features a funky gota border and a vibrant orange color that’s popping up everywhere this spring. Like Kavita’s runway looks, this suit has subtle detailing that takes a classic silhouette to the next level.

And if you’re looking for a way to glam up your favorite saree, Kavita’s blouses are the perfect fix. For an earthy, all-over glow, try Luxemi’s Gold Stretch Satin Blouse with Embellished Neckline by Kavita Bhartia. Another Kavita Bhartia blouse in our collection, the Black Sequined Stretch Blouse, is as vibrant as the gold blouse is subtle. It’s guaranteed to make your go-to saree night-ready in a flash.

Kavita recently said, “My idea is to design clothes that have a global appeal yet exude India’s rich textile heritage. I believe in dressing the world but retaining a sense of Indian-ness in my garments.” We’re betting Kavita won’t be leaving the world’s fashion radar anytime soon!
